Latest email, first in two weeks, verbatim... Dear Sonia, Brent, Lydia and Emily, Here is our latest news. The weather has gone mad. Yesterday, it was snowing in Munich in May. We have been watching the French Open and the spectators are wrapped up in furry coats. We have turned on the heating in our apartment and if it doesn’t warm up soon, I will have to buy some warm clothing because I took a minimum of winter clothes which I thought that I would only need in Canada. Last Thursday was Ascension Thursday – here it is a public holiday called Christ Himmelfahrt (literal translation is Christ travelling to Heaven) and so people try to make it a long weekend. There were 50 Km traffic snarls on all roads north, south and west out of Germany. They were probably trying to escape the cool, damp weather we’ve had for almost two weeks. We attended the High Mass at the Dom (cathedral). It was marvellous. There was the Archbishop, two Bishops, about 8 priests, about 30 altar boys/girls. The Cologne Cathedral choi

Cathedral choir which had boy sopranos to men in it was just left of where we luckily were seated. They have a lot of religious holidays here. In the afternoon we visited the Muehlenhof Open-Air Museum near Aasee. It had examples of old timbered houses and workshops. It was cold and wet but there was a warm coffee house where we enjoyed plum tart, cream and coffee. Last weekend was Muenster’s Eurocityfest. The cobbled main shopping street was strung with Euro flags and was lined with stalls selling regional specialties, trinkets or travel information. The best part was the entertainment particularly the music. There was one band with 80 young musicians and a lovely vocalist. On Saturday we went on the English language guided tour of Muenster – it is always worth doing as they point out things that you would miss. On Sunday we went to the city museum to see how Muenster has developed (and been regularly wiped out by wars) since 805AD. It was most interesting. The remainder of both days was spent wandering aro

They're on a 5 month holiday
Left a week or so after I found out the big C was back (its in the first pages of this thread). I was all upset they decided to go anyway, Mum said she'd "Come back early if it all turns to custard" which was highly amusing in a bizarre way at the time! It's turned out OK, appointment times are now good, causing minimal disruption for us and others, so glad they went (would be feeling guilty if they'd stayed). They go overseas a lot though, so could have done all this better. But I'm lucky they helped out as much as they did before they left. Not everyone has such good support, I know. I just love the absence of "How are you?"s when they do make contact LOL

In regards to the e-mail from your parents, I can understand how disappointing the lack of support will be. Without going into details here, I remember my sister being devastated at the lack of support our mother gave during a crisis in her life and the same day hearing Dr Phil (oh wise one) saying 'there will be times when people we expect will support us, and who we need close, let us down. Its certainly not a good feeling, especially when it seems they have forgotton our plight and left us to cope while they carry on having a ball. Dr Phil's advise was that we need to take a firm hold onto the people who are being supportive and focus on the encouragement we are receiving from others to get us through. I know you have a loving and supportive husband with you and hope you also have friends and others who are there for you during this difficult time.

Can understand how you feel. Reading your parents email, I must admit I thought it was strange as well. I guess maybe (?) they're in denial and don't really want to face or think about your illness and this may be their way of coping with it by not mentioning it and hoping that it will just go away and you'll be well. People react differently and maybe this is their coping mechanism - not acknowledging. They may not be able to express how they feel?? I read your thread and all the other ladies posts every day and have nothing but admiration, best wishes and hope or you all.XXX

We had a terrible thing happen in our family and the one I thought would help me through it turned his back. I am still shattered by it but try to focus on the good people in my life. Off for chemo and grr we have been told to boil all water as of Monday afternoon but I only found out Wed lunchtime and drunk heaps in those 2 days! Got to go buy some bottle water for this morning. Joystik if you know anyone that gets the Aussie Womans Weekly see if you can get hold of Oct 05 issue. There is an interesting article about 4 generation of one family with it and research being done in Australia. I was reading it at the hospital and was going to ask the xray receptionist to copy it for me but she looked a bit grumpy!!!! Also did anyone hear on breakfast this morning about uk research in giving woman 13 big doses of radiation instead of 25 smaller ones. Grr next hurdle is radiation and junior Drs both threatening strike action about when I am due to start radiation. Have a good day everyone.

Thinking of you Bogeyi - hope the appointment went well (((((hugs))))) Its a pain how the mind can play havoc with your sleep. Its funny, I've been noticing recently that I've been having these incredibly vivid, real and extreme dreams (I'm not usually much of a dreamer LOL) and only just twigged that its the melatonin I'm taking thats causing it. It's bizarre that something that is a celebrated natural sleeping pill, has this as a possible side-effect!?! (It is a documented side effect). Now not sure whether that means I'm taking too much (only taking one pill), don't really need it or if this is actually a good thing?! More googling required ;o)

Yes she's a lady who totally lives in denial - I could go on but actually I'm not bothered by it these days - just intrigued by it really! (We're total polar opposites as people - sometimes thats a good thing ;o) But right now - Well, its certainly not what I'd do if either of my girls were in this situation. But that said, she may well just be burnt out - she helped out a LOT during chemo, did all my ironing, picked up the girls for me at the drop of a hat, etc etc. I was very very lucky to have that - think I got a bit spoilt actually ;o) Anyway, I find it funny how the insensitive stuff like that will only happen on one of my very very few down days - what's with that?! Feeling much better today and, wouldn't you know it, can't feel lumps now - they come and go, so think I'll brave it alone with Dr Benji and just ask lots more questions ;o) Must be scar tissue, hopefully ;o)

What's wrong with the water??? Don't you hate that, I can understand what you're feeling - fingers crossed eh? Cant help out with that article sorry - you should have just borrowed the mag - that's what everyone else does! I'm a major magazine reader at the mo, and when I finish them I leave them all in the waiting rooms, so others can enjoy nice recent ones. Anyway, realised this morning that they've ALL disappeared!?! Not a single one left in the rooms! I did permanently borrow one from there at the beginning as I was actually featured in it LOL (was in hospital when it came out so never managed to get a copy), but that was one 6 month old copy and I've replaced with about 15 new mags so figured that was OK?! Hope so! ;o)

2033. Hi there everyone......I had such a good sleep....
last night and in my own bed again, with no drains to get in the way. Woke up bright eyed and bushy taied at 5.30am and got up and got Lauren sorted for her school trip to Arrowtown, to learn all about the Chinese people and their Gold Prospecting. She left at 6.30 and will be home onight about 5.30. I went back to bed and slept til 9am!! The frost was fabulous at -7 deg, and looked just like snow!! The day is stunning. Nurse has been, and I am doing a bit of house work and trying to get sorted for my contact assessment for Real Estate. So if you don't see me on here much, you will know I am bogged down into a bit of final study. I SOOOoooo..... much want to get the Certificate before I start my Chemo. That was when I feel well enough, I can do a bit of work. Hope you are all having the best day ever.

family can do isnt it. But, in saying that, my Father, who I havn't spoken to for almost 10years, phoned me the night I got my histology results, and was genuinely sad about what is happening to me right now. And also my Oldest brother (I have 5) that I haven't had much to do with either, he rang too, so that was nice, really that they are concerned under that other front they all put up. Sometimes it peoples way of coping. But hey if Fruit did the trick, I wouldnt have got Cancer at all. We have fruit for africa in this house, in fact, thats usually all Lauren takes for her school lunch, raw fruit and vegiesHope your day is good...Hugs to you..

Hi Sonia, there is another angle to the off-hand treatment your parents are giving you at the moment. When I got cancer last year my mum didn't want to know anything about it. She was 91 and I have been her main (and only carer) for years, and I realised later that she was terrified that something would happen to me and she would have no one left. One day I told her that my skin had broken badly under my breast from radiotherapy, and she said "I've had a bad day too". I am not condoning your parents attitude, as Mum hurt me a lot with her indifference, but just suggesting there may be another side to it. Mum thought if she didn't talk about it, then it wasn't happening. She has passed away now, but my oncology specialist thought that caring for Mum had a lot to do with my stress levels and getting cancer.

tomorrow. Last november the fna was negative, and the mammo and us showed what they 'thought' was bruising. The upshot is they decided on a 6 month repeat. Thing is, I have felt a heaviness and pulling in that breast ever since (and I have a sore armpit). I have been to the GP with it and he thought the armpit was inflammation. So, I'm glad the thinking is over and the doing is tomorrow. I'm nervous because of my fam history. But I'm glad the last 6 months is finally over and I can be retested.

I know how u must feel. Just had mastectomy 15th May after having lumpectomy 8 yrs ago and radiation treatment then. Waiting 2 c surgeon 12th 2 c what is next in store 4 me. I can really sympathise with you. All the VERY BEST and oh yes I found the lump myself, both times. Lots of Hugs and Kisses and Cuddles needed for all cancer patients. It is my caravan that has just been stolen from Rotorua (see Message) that's all I needed.

Hello can I come in for a minute..I had to do a lot for my mum and dad before they passed away, sometimes my mum would not talk to me when I rang up, I didn't know why, but after she had gone I found a note written to me saying she was really sorry for the hurt she had caused and grateful for all I had done, I really treasure this little note. she wants to wait and see the next 2 chromorism tests to see if there is any change, there are two options a full transplant with radition this time and a stronger chemo or what they call a top up where they use tylers lymphosytes and transplant little at a time.Both options are with very high risks especially the first one :(, in saying this our doctor is very positive in the way she explained the good and the bad.His neutrafils went up again to .67 so doc is pleased ans still says she dosent understand why these are going up but marrow hasnt moved. Randal was there today so that was good normally by the time i get home i have forgotten the info or its to complicated to repeat.I left there today feeling alot better about the situation. Ryan needed platelets again today as the reaction earlier in the week ate them up.

Few gypsys have been passing thru town today Paula. They are doing a $12 million upgrade on our town water supplies and contractors buggered something on Monday and it meant the chloronation plant got put out of action meaning the whole town has to boil water until today. Unforutunately I'm not a radio listener, there was nothing in the local rag on Tuesday and I eventually read about it on Wed lunchtime after having drunk gallons of the stuff! Had a dose of sitting on the loo today which made me nervous after chemo but I am on Metformin for diabetes and sometimes these pills upset the tummy so feeling better tonight and I think thats what it has been. Cut them out for rest of day and relied on insulin but have blood sugar of 26 tonight which should be about 7! Looks like the alarm will be set a couple of times tonight! Got 4 spare teens also s

I was just thinking the other day how at the time I had the op I was horrified at how I looked, but now I'm more than happy with it! I used to wear a prosthesis religiously (as soon as I could) for ages until a month or two ago, and now, quite frankly can't be bothered putting it back in, except on special occasions ;o) Anyway, pop in anytime, vent or talk away. Good luck for the 12th ;o)

No worries ;o) Skin has formed now over most of the wound - hopefully will be all covered when I wake tomorrow. Sweet as :o) And (touch wood) the area being treated now is still perfectly fine (touch wood) so no bandaging etc needed there. That bodes well for the party :o)

Busy day here too with all the gypsy's and not one of them stopped to tell me what the future holds... maybe its best that way eh? You poor thing, yucky water, ooohhh. When we first moved here I was drinking the water heaps, then got a bucket to wash the steps and about four worms came out of the tap, then found out from a neighbour the lady who'd lived here got giardia. We instanty phoned for a filter and yes I too had a crook tum. Hope you get a peaceful night, sounds like there is a possibility you'll get seranaded later. Take care and hope your blood sugars come down soon.

I'm well thanks, got most of the house like a museum now finally LOL (M-I-L was popping by ;o) so that feels good - lets see how long it lasts LOL. Had a good talk with counsellor, discussed upcoming oncology meeting - all the feelings there and things at home (Brent etc). Picked up the dressups for tomorrow night - will be going out tomorrow morning to get some accessories to dress it up a bit LOL. Thank goodness its sale time at the mo ;o) Yesterday our curtains finally arrived for this study so put them up too. So plan this avo is to try and sort out this room some more, its like a project without an end this room, as soon as I get through one pile another "to do" pile appears! Just doing it when I feel motivated to - life's to short to spend all day tidying ;o) But feel like it today :o) Sorry to hear Josh is emotional at the mo - you can tell him I am too ;o) Must be the weather ;o) xx

Your sister may be lucky and NOT get the monster back, heres good wishes to her. Masectomy not as bad as when I had lumpectomy and had lymph nodes removed, they cut nerves in armpit (does happen) that was like getting electric shocks down arm REAL BAD. All going well this time so far and healing well but just yesterday had to have some fluid drained off - not much tho. Kind regards and best wishes, lots of love and hugs to all

bloodsugars should be 7 and have hit 29.1! Own fault as they were already high from steroids and I picked up bottle of ordinary lemonade instead of diet this afternoon and drunk wrong stuff so finished them off! They reckon I will be out tomorrow for the hen party so thats ok. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

No longer living in a museum LOL amazing what 3 kids can do to a house in a few hours (neighbours 9yo daughter here also - we have her here every Friday afternoon after school - she's a great babysitter and she enjoys playing with the girls - while I get things done! Mine was ductal too, but had spread to either 1 or 3 nodes (depending one which specialist reads the results?!). This time though most lumps are in remaining nodes, so... node removal looks highly likely. Personally, at this stage, I don't care what they do as long as it stops the monster dead in its tracks - they can chop out part of my ribcage if they want to! Its funny how different my mentality is about it all now - when first lump found, all I was concerned about was losing my boob, I thought that was a disaster! Guess I'm just climbing up the ladder of acceptance LOL Yes I have a lot to fight for, so on with the boxing gloves and off I go ;o) Good luck to you too with everything :o)

I missed you all and just haven't really been here at all. Had my friend from Nelson made a special trip down to see me. She and her new partner arrived last nite and it was so ,lovely to see her again, and especially to see her so happy with the new man in her life. We hadn't met him before either, and he seems lovely. She stayed in Riverton the night and arrived back this morning and we spent the day together here just catching up.. It was quite cold and cloudy until about 2pm and then it cleared away and was beautiful and sunny, but is cloudy again now. I think rain is on its way for tomorrow. no, they haven't come but friends of their's arrived last night. I haven't been for a walk yet I did think about it and I will. You would love our beach out here it is really quite ruggeg I love it. Malc goes over everyday and looks at the sea to see if he can fish or not he has caught quite a few cod this week and they were lovely.We are only 150 met. from the sea here.

Hi. we are ok thanks. Chris has gone off to feed the cows so I am packing and sorting for the week in Christchurch. Everytime I walk into a room I think about 6 things at once and walk out again. Last time I had to pack for Chch was when Josh was 1st diagnosed. Its a weird feeling. BUT got a bag to use for 1 of the kids and found $100 petrol vouchers and $100 pak n save vouchers from Oct from CCF. They had slipped under the bottom part of the bag and I forgot about them when unpacking when we got home. YAY! What a bonus. Hope you are good and Ryan too. Do you have 3 boys?? Cant remember if you said before. Hope the others are good too!!!

will be a big relief to you. Great night had by all Sonia! Does you good to have a blow out occassionally! You looked wow! We had a good night with the hen party too. Bridesmaid had all the food done and came out and decorated the place. I didn't get to bed until 1.30am either but hey does you good! They started at 6pm and went to town about midnight to pub and nightclub. Would have loved to have gone too but had another night of 2-3 hourly blood testing so was better at home! Just done a bit of minor cleanup and got another night out tonight. Might need a nana nap today expecting more visitors. Will be having a few quite days and catch prior to that last dose of chemo on Thursday!

Diagnosed Sept 2004 with Ovarian Cancer on Wednesday went to Onocology to usual 6th month appointment Now I have secondaries. Not good but I am going to fight all the way and you must too. Yesterday two extremely nice young men from a well known church came to my door and offered to do my garden for free. It is becoming overgrown and it is one of my passions. Confirmed my faith in human nature. We must all fight and fight and fight. Best of luck. Maybe you could give me an email and we can help one another.

Thanks, yes we had an awesome night - can't believe how the time flew - it was great! There were some awesome getups there - silly us left renting ours till the last week, so, with 300 people raiding all the dressups places before us - there was very little left! Did a big sleep-in this morning, then went and collected the girls. Girls were angels apparently but they've had very short fuses in last hour so packed off to bed. Must have been overexcited from it all. Oh well! Think I'd better lie down again now, all that dancing and late night has me feeling a bit washed out! Will catch up with the thread later. side and it is the most crystal clear night with a lovely bright moon, but not really cold. Yes, I watched the weather on tv1 and commented to my husband that 'my friends' from Gore might encounter some snow tomorrow on the way to Christchurch. We officially only get snow once a year here, but haven't had a fall on the ground for 3 years now I believe. We have only been here 1 year and last winter was very mild. I love snow, but Kevin's not so keen. He drove log trucks in Cnaterbury for years and the snow was such a pain up there in the winter. You will get up there OK tomorrow but take it easy, and drive really carefully wont you. I will be thinking of you. How much is settling on the ground??

2194. My Lauren just loves sleep overs too.....and alway
has done since she was really small. She went on her first holiday without Mummy when she was one!! I cried - she had a ball!! Now she like to have 3 or 4 girls at a time to sleepover. I dont mind, you get that when you only have 1 child. But there are bonus's too. Are you feeling rested now too?? You looked fabulous in your Orange gear. It reminded me of a dress my Auntie in Wellington had made and sent to me for an end of year school social/dance when I was at high school. It was long,in tiers, bright orange print (quite pretty) and she sent bright orange platform shoes and huge big beads to match. It probably wouldnt have been out of place in Wellington at the time, but it certainly was in Collingwood!! Bless her though, it was very kind of her to go to all the trouble, and she did it becaise our family home had burned down and we had lost absolutely everything, only a few weeks before.

I certainly wouldn't have chosen it if there had been an alternative LOL! But it looked pretty good - The wig was riding up in the pics, I realised shortly after and fixed it up! You'd think I'd have been onto it, being used to wigs now and all, but nooo! A lot of family commented on how much sympathy they have for me now that they had to wear a wig for one night - I thought that was quite amusing! Man, what a disaster that must have been with your house burning down back then, a house burned down up the road from us about 6 months ago and I just so felt for the family. Does that mean there are no childhood pics of you etc? Hope you're comfortable and happy this evening. Must go put Em to bed now!

we had 8-9 here one night for a 10th birthday party. NEVER again! We had a sleep walker. Some got to sleep then she started and woke them all up again. They went to sleep at 2am and were all awake again at 4pm. Hubby got 2 hours sleep and left for Chch at 4.30am. He stopped en route and had a kip on side of the road. When I asked how he knew he would wake up and still get to his meeting on time his reply was he only snoozed for 1/2 hour, it was so cold!!!! That slumber party is still talked about. Much sooner have boys to them! They will get tired and go to sleep!

from back then, only have what other people had and have copied given back to us. Absolutely everything was lost, and sadly the stress of it was too much for Mum and her health quickly went down hill and sadly the dreaded cancer returned, and she died a couple of years after. It was just devastating for my Mum to see her whole lifes work go up in flames in a few minutes. She was always a homebody, (not like me) and just lived for her home and family. And she was only 48, which made it even more tragic.

My husband who was now a year ago given 3 - 6 months without treatment and 6 - 12 with is still going strong and is at present almost cancer free ... positive thinking and alot of herbs alongside the radiation and chemo it al counts for something. Selenium was oneof the most valuable. Good luck all those out there fighting it... just be positive and set yourself small goals to make it to.

that many girls all at once. Lauren is a kid that needs her sleep, which i kinda like, cos she only has kids to stay that are like her and will go to sleep by about 11pm at the latest. That I can cope with. In Oamaru we had down stairs so we let them sleep down there, but one decided to call up her boyfriend and hed off out the back door and meet him, which really upset Lauren. She hadn't gone far when I was alerted, and she was only 13 at the time, so I thought she was a bit young for all that stuff anyway. Girls can get quite catty in groups I have found.

nicer friends now and that cattiness has long since disappeared, thank goodness. She almost has someone here every weekend, but it doesn't bother me. They keep them selves entertained and feed themselves too, so theres no extra work. And they just go for walks, sing, and watch movies, and theres no harm in any of that. Hope it stays like that for some time yet too.

Yes its so interesting about cancer and stress. The two are definitely intertwined! To that end I saw a cd in the supermarket this evening (Electric Dreams) and saw it has heaps of oldies I still just LOVE to hear and sing along to (Title song, plus Ultravox Vienna, etc etc etc), so bought it, put both disks straight in the car. Now I have lots of lovely music to sing away to on my way to radiation each day. Can't wait to play them all... Yippee! Thats the ticket ;o)

There is a little snow on the ground this morning. Nothing too drastic. It really is a still a novelty to me too. Our first season here was a wicked one and I think Josh had about 4 days off (not in a row) school as snow days. Very popular you can imagine. kids next door get towed around on their taboggan by their dad on the quad. Cool fun! We made snow angels in the lawn. Have a safe trip Paula. It's very cold but clear (for now) up here (Tuahiwi,North Canterbury) this morning. There will be heaps of traffic on the roads today too, I would imagine. It's acutally worse thinking about losing your hair. Paul (my bloke) shaved mine off just before it was due to start falling out. A good decision for me as I guess I felt it was me that was in control and not the drugs!! We had fun doing it though..had all sorts of different hair styles. Always wondered what I would look like with a mohawk! Nope not a good look!! lol

I have had a real busy day washing drapes and curtains for this house we have just bought it is so dirty it is going to take day's to clean it. The bowling girls have offered to help me which I really appreciate because I think it will be the bowling season before I finish. It is a nice house and can be made really homely. Hi all, sorry I've been away - busy busy busy!
I spent a lot of yesterday gardening, repotting plants, weeding etc etc and rest of time catching up on chores, washing etc etc. Was so tired last night I just crashed in front of the TV (Not something I do often!) watching The Good Life (we just bought the DVD at the sales). Anyway.... my skin is healing up beautifully, doesn't look at all angry anymore - technicians were most surprised this morning saying WOW its healing well, so thats good :o) Downside, stupid public system... yes my appointment with Dr Benji was yesterday but because it was a public holiday it didn't happen and we all simply miss out for 2 weeks?! What a load of garbage - why'd they make an appointment on a Public Holiday in the first place, and as he's only there on Mondays we all get bumped a week or something?!? Then, on top of that, I realised that my last treatment should be this Friday (first day of strike) so end of treatment will be delayed 6 days for me to get just one more zap. Nope, not on peoples!!!! Sorry, venting :o/!!! Will

I think I'll demand that the end of treatment is dated from this Friday, for the 4 week wait till CT scan, not after the tsupid week later last blast. Thats the best I can demand really...

Yep it was a busy weekend all right - resting yesterday afternoon before doing dinner, then again after putting girls to bed. We all slept in chronically this morning (8am!). Anyone who has preschoolers/5 year olds will know how impossible it is to speed them up by 3/4 of an hour in the morning!?! They just ended up in tears :o/ Of course I had an earlier-than-usual appointment this morning, can't believe I made it (just!). Phew!!! OK gotta put Emily down to bed soon ;o)

Good luck for your Oncology meeting today - hope it goes OK. Now you've already gone I can say that mine was a shock to me, thought my picture was a lot rosier than it was, and he certainly let me know that!? I have the same feeling going into this Fridays one, nervous as #shrugs#. As Landylass said, don't fret about the chemo, all those printouts look really scary but its really not that bad, they just have to cover themselves by putting down every possible side-effect, but only a few of all those happen really, its just that different people react to it in very different ways. For me the actual treatment was a pleasant surprise - not bad at all, actually I had fun ;o) (((((hugs))))) xx

just thinking about what you got up to over the weekend! Grr fancy missing out on your very last blast because of strikes. Boy that would make me really mad. Glad to hear you are healing so well though. I got a letter from DHB on Sat too about the strikes but then there is still the junior drs threatening too. This round of strikes won't effect me unless it pushes all the appointments back. I was originally told 4 week break after chemo so won't worry me if they want to delay start to radiation for a couple of weeks. Joshsi is such a coooooool kid. The way Paula was talking she is intending to try to meet some of Auckland ones while there. I am on a mission today to get some answers re these blood sugars as last dose of chemo on Thursday and this one will be the one that will knock me and I don't want another visit to A&E! I am getting conflicting advice so on a mission for some answers but can't get hold of the people I need to talk to! And Sonia no I haven't been to da Vinci code yet!

Are you OK? You're not sounding very happy today - hope all is OK with Ryan :o) Had an awesome facial thanks - the rest of the day has been a shambles - traffic jams, I've even lost my keys (all of them!) and can't find them ANYWHERE?! well I had the meeting with Dr Perez the Oncologist from Dunedin today. After a long wait in the waiting room we finally got in there. He explained why I should have Chemo, because I had a high grade Tumor, and because I had 10 of 16 lymph nodes involved. He said that Chemo is no guarantee, but could improve my rate of cure by 65% or a little more, but that it was up to me if I had it or not! Of course I am going to, I need all the help I can get to beat this thing.
2265. OK so thats the same odds I was given with
standard chemo Joystik (ie first time around with only 1 large lump and 1 or 3 nodes affected). I reckon that stuff worked for me - otherwise I'd be riddled with cancer, not just local recurrance as it is. Hope that helps? Did he mention other pay chemo options above that? I'm guessing not?

2268. So I will be starting my Chemo next Thursday....
It is FEC, I will be having 6 treatments at 3 week intervals, that is assuming all is ok with bloods etc, so much what you have all had I guess. He told me that the most distressing thing about the chemo is the hair loss, but it does grow back. I got a prescription for 5 different anti nausea drugs, so i'm ready to go. I wont have my port in when I start but should by the second treatment.
2269. After that I have to go to Dunedin for 3 weeks....
for radiotherapy, and the probably hormone therapy for 5 years. So there is a bit too do yet, but all this treatment is going to be my friend at the end of the day. I can beat this and I WILL!!!!

Ryan found that the hardest part when i had to shave it short (hes always loved his hair would spike it)as it was starting to fall out he thought i was shaving it all off he was crying, even the nurse had to walk out as she couldnt bear him crying.He wouldnt look in the mirror kept saying im ugly, took a few days before he came to like his bald look, i loved it really suited him bought out his gorgeous eyes.

the best part of the information??? The CT scan I had last wednesday, was totally CLEAR. So that was the good news of the day, and I just about jumped up and kissed the poor man when he told me, I was so relieved. That is one less thing to worry about. Beautiful crisp morning here too. Joystik so pleased the CT Scan was all clear. Seems they treat everyone differently with chemo. I was on the CAF recipe. Did they give you a voucher to go and sort out a wig? I had a couple of fun days doing that. Take a friend with you to help make the decision.My friend took photos of me with different wigs on. That was fun. I didn't wear mine that much, but it was great when you went out wanting to look 'normal'.

The outlook is good for me and after a dose of chemo I should be fine. I take my hat off to all you brave people who are going through a very hard time and able to stay positive through this.

for that mattymouse, yes bladder cancer does have a high success rate which is why I feel lucky compared to what other people on here have suffered. The doc told me I had one in a million chance of getting this type of cancer as I have no risk factors ie I am reasonably young at 38, I am female and I don't smoke. Why can't I be the one in a million who wins lotto! lol. How was your Mum after surgery? did she get up and about fairly quickly?

and thanks to all for your great support in my hours of need, it was really funny as i set off to napier at 9am on thursday and at about 12pm i got a ph call from the mr, i had asked him to phone if results came so when i saw his number come up i got very nervous (which isnt good while you are driving lol) so he told me exactly as the letter said that it was fibrocystic cysts and that it wasnt serious, thats what the letter said (it was from my doc) well from then on all the way there i had this stupid grin on my face everyone must of thought i was nutty but i wanted to wave to the world and let them all know about it, i hope all you brave ladies get good news about whatever it is you need, and hugs to you all, you have been a tower of strenghth when i needed it, hugs hugs and more hugs

Hopefully you'll not have to have anymore nodes removed, I did'nt cause they were removed with lumpectomy op but apparently we have lots of them and they have got all the monster this time too. My monster was ductal (in milk ducts) but I believe there's different sorts of the monster.

Mine was ductal too, but had spread to either 1 or 3 nodes (depending one which specialist reads the results?!). This time though most lumps are in remaining nodes, so... node removal looks highly likely. Personally, at this stage, I don't care what they do as long as it stops the monster dead in its tracks - they can chop out part of my ribcage if they want to! Its funny how different my mentality is about it all now - when first lump found, all I was concerned about was losing my boob, I thought that was a disaster! Guess I'm just climbing up the ladder of acceptance LOL Yes I have a lot to fight for, so on with the boxing gloves and off I go ;o) Good luck to you too with everything :o)

I missed you all and just haven't really been here at all. Had my friend from Nelson made a special trip down to see me. She and her new partner arrived last nite and it was so ,lovely to see her again, and especially to see her so happy with the new man in her life. We hadn't met him before either, and he seems lovely. She stayed in Riverton the night and arrived back this morning and we spent the day together here just catching up.. It was quite cold and cloudy until about 2pm and then it cleared away and was beautiful and sunny, but is cloudy again now. I think rain is on its way for tomorrow. Hope you got all your cows moved Paula. I had a look at Josh's new site and its lovely. I will have to go back there cos I couldn't leave a message for whatever reason. for your trip to the beach. We used to live at the beach at Charteris Bay on Banks Penensula, and it was great there. My Lauren is a bit of a beachcomber still actually, and will spend hours wandering along gathering things up to bring home. When she was much younger it was crabs and live things, now thankfully she goes more for shells and pretty things!! I've been thinking about you guys and sending you hugs......

night in the hospital. You dont get any sleep in there do you. I was in and out of bed all night wandering about, not able to sleep, and helping the other patients in the room!! So, I was pleased to get back in my own bed and off that sweaty plastic mattress! Hope your home is bug free again and your ankle is feeling much better. Is it Chemo for you this week? Did you have 6 months worth?? Does it go quite quickly? I will now after tuesday what my treatment will involve. Hugs to you too....

no, they haven't come but friends of their's arrived last night. I haven't been for a walk yet I did think about it and I will. You would love our beach out here it is really quite ruggeg I love it. Malc goes over everyday and looks at the sea to see if he can fish or not he has caught quite a few cod this week and they were lovely.We are only 150 met. from the sea here.

Hi. we are ok thanks. Chris has gone off to feed the cows so I am packing and sorting for the week in Christchurch. Everytime I walk into a room I think about 6 things at once and walk out again. Last time I had to pack for Chch was when Josh was 1st diagnosed. Its a weird feeling. BUT got a bag to use for 1 of the kids and found $100 petrol vouchers and $100 pak n save vouchers from Oct from CCF. They had slipped under the bottom part of the bag and I forgot about them when unpacking when we got home. YAY! What a bonus. Hope you are good and Ryan too. Do you have 3 boys?? Cant remember if you said before. Hope the others are good too!!!

will be a big relief to you. Great night had by all Sonia! Does you good to have a blow out occassionally! You looked wow! We had a good night with the hen party too. Bridesmaid had all the food done and came out and decorated the place. I didn't get to bed until 1.30am either but hey does you good! They started at 6pm and went to town about midnight to pub and nightclub. Would have loved to have gone too but had another night of 2-3 hourly blood testing so was better at home! Just done a bit of minor cleanup and got another night out tonight. Might need a nana nap today expecting more visitors. Will be having a few quite days and catch prior to that last dose of chemo on Thursday!

Diagnosed Sept 2004 with Ovarian Cancer on Wednesday went to Onocology to usual 6th month appointment Now I have secondaries. Not good but I am going to fight all the way and you must too. Yesterday two extremely nice young men from a well known church came to my door and offered to do my garden for free. It is becoming overgrown and it is one of my passions. Confirmed my faith in human nature. We must all fight and fight and fight. Best of luck. Maybe you could give me an email and we can help one another.

Thanks, yes we had an awesome night - can't believe how the time flew - it was great! There were some awesome getups there - silly us left renting ours till the last week, so, with 300 people raiding all the dressups places before us - there was very little left! Did a big sleep-in this morning, then went and collected the girls. Girls were angels apparently but they've had very short fuses in last hour so packed off to bed. Must have been overexcited from it all. Oh well! Think I'd better lie down again now, all that dancing and late night has me feeling a bit washed out! Will catch up with the thread later. side and it is the most crystal clear night with a lovely bright moon, but not really cold. Yes, I watched the weather on tv1 and commented to my husband that 'my friends' from Gore might encounter some snow tomorrow on the way to Christchurch. We officially only get snow once a year here, but haven't had a fall on the ground for 3 years now I believe. We have only been here 1 year and last winter was very mild. I love snow, but Kevin's not so keen. He drove log trucks in Cnaterbury for years and the snow was such a pain up there in the winter. You will get up there OK tomorrow but take it easy, and drive really carefully wont you. I will be thinking of you. How much is settling on the ground??

2194. My Lauren just loves sleep overs too.....and alway
has done since she was really small. She went on her first holiday without Mummy when she was one!! I cried - she had a ball!! Now she like to have 3 or 4 girls at a time to sleepover. I dont mind, you get that when you only have 1 child. But there are bonus's too. Are you feeling rested now too?? You looked fabulous in your Orange gear. It reminded me of a dress my Auntie in Wellington had made and sent to me for an end of year school social/dance when I was at high school. It was long,in tiers, bright orange print (quite pretty) and she sent bright orange platform shoes and huge big beads to match. It probably wouldnt have been out of place in Wellington at the time, but it certainly was in Collingwood!! Bless her though, it was very kind of her to go to all the trouble, and she did it becaise our family home had burned down and we had lost absolutely everything, only a few weeks before.

I certainly wouldn't have chosen it if there had been an alternative LOL! But it looked pretty good - The wig was riding up in the pics, I realised shortly after and fixed it up! You'd think I'd have been onto it, being used to wigs now and all, but nooo! A lot of family commented on how much sympathy they have for me now that they had to wear a wig for one night - I thought that was quite amusing! Man, what a disaster that must have been with your house burning down back then, a house burned down up the road from us about 6 months ago and I just so felt for the family. Does that mean there are no childhood pics of you etc? Hope you're comfortable and happy this evening. Must go put Em to bed now!

we had 8-9 here one night for a 10th birthday party. NEVER again! We had a sleep walker. Some got to sleep then she started and woke them all up again. They went to sleep at 2am and were all awake again at 4pm. Hubby got 2 hours sleep and left for Chch at 4.30am. He stopped en route and had a kip on side of the road. When I asked how he knew he would wake up and still get to his meeting on time his reply was he only snoozed for 1/2 hour, it was so cold!!!! That slumber party is still talked about. Much sooner have boys to them! They will get tired and go to sleep!

Absolutely everything was lost, and sadly the stress of it was too much for Mum and her health quickly went down hill and sadly the dreaded cancer returned, and she died a couple of years after. It was just devastating for my Mum to see her whole lifes work go up in flames in a few minutes. She was always a homebody, (not like me) and just lived for her home and family. And she was only 48, which made it even more tragic.

My husband who was now a year ago given 3 - 6 months without treatment and 6 - 12 with is still going strong and is at present almost cancer free ... positive thinking and alot of herbs alongside the radiation and chemo it al counts for something. Selenium was oneof the most valuable. Good luck all those out there fighting it... just be positive and set yourself small goals to make it to.

that many girls all at once. Lauren is a kid that needs her sleep, which i kinda like, cos she only has kids to stay that are like her and will go to sleep by about 11pm at the latest. That I can cope with. In Oamaru we had down stairs so we let them sleep down there, but one decided to call up her boyfriend and hed off out the back door and meet him, which really upset Lauren. She hadn't gone far when I was alerted, and she was only 13 at the time, so I thought she was a bit young for all that stuff anyway. Girls can get quite catty in groups I have found.

having the boys to stay. Once they get over pubity the girls seem to settle down! Miss16 got a good bunch of friends now and no cattiness now. But it was there about 10 -12 age group.

nicer friends now and that cattiness has long since disappeared, thank goodness. She almost has someone here every weekend, but it doesn't bother me. They keep them selves entertained and feed themselves too, so theres no extra work. And they just go for walks, sing, and watch movies, and theres no harm in any of that. Hope it stays like that for some time yet too.

Yes its so interesting about cancer and stress. The two are definitely intertwined! To that end I saw a cd in the supermarket this evening (Electric Dreams) and saw it has heaps of oldies I still just LOVE to hear and sing along to (Title song, plus Ultravox Vienna, etc etc etc), so bought it, put both disks straight in the car. Now I have lots of lovely music to sing away to on my way to radiation each day. Can't wait to play them all... Yippee! Thats the ticket ;o)

There is a little snow on the ground this morning. Nothing too drastic. It really is a still a novelty to me too. Our first season here was a wicked one and I think Josh had about 4 days off (not in a row) school as snow days. Very popular you can imagine. kids next door get towed around on their taboggan by their dad on the quad. Cool fun! We made snow angels in the lawn. Have a safe trip Paula. It's very cold but clear (for now) up here (Tuahiwi,North Canterbury) this morning. There will be heaps of traffic on the roads today too, I would imagine. All the best for you appointment tomorrow. It brings back memories. Once your treatment is underway, it's easier somehow. You just focus on getting through it and out the other side. It's acutally worse thinking about losing your hair. Paul (my bloke) shaved mine off just before it was due to start falling out. A good decision for me as I guess I felt it was me that was in control and not the drugs!! We had fun doing it though..had all sorts of different hair styles. Always wondered what I would look like with a mohawk! Nope not a good look!! lol

Hi all, sorry I've been away - busy busy busy!
I spent a lot of yesterday gardening, repotting plants, weeding etc etc and rest of time catching up on chores, washing etc etc. Was so tired last night I just crashed in front of the TV (Not something I do often!) watching The Good Life (we just bought the DVD at the sales). Anyway.... my skin is healing up beautifully, doesn't look at all angry anymore - technicians were most surprised this morning saying WOW its healing well, so thats good :o) Downside, stupid public system... yes my appointment with Dr Benji was yesterday but because it was a public holiday it didn't happen and we all simply miss out for 2 weeks?! What a load of garbage - why'd they make an appointment on a Public Holiday in the first place, and as he's only there on Mondays we all get bumped a week or something?!? Then, on top of that, I realised that my last treatment should be this Friday (first day of strike) so end of treatment will be delayed 6 days for me to get just one more zap. Nope, not on peoples!!!! Sorry, venting :o/!!! Will

Good luck for your Oncology meeting today - hope it goes OK. Now you've already gone I can say that mine was a shock to me, thought my picture was a lot rosier than it was, and he certainly let me know that!? I have the same feeling going into this Fridays one, nervous as #shrugs#. As Landylass said, don't fret about the chemo, all those printouts look really scary but its really not that bad, they just have to cover themselves by putting down every possible side-effect, but only a few of all those happen really, its just that different people react to it in very different ways. For me the actual treatment was a pleasant surprise - not bad at all, actually I had fun ;o) (((((hugs))))) xx

just thinking about what you got up to over the weekend! Grr fancy missing out on your very last blast because of strikes. Boy that would make me really mad. Glad to hear you are healing so well though. I got a letter from DHB on Sat too about the strikes but then there is still the junior drs threatening too. This round of strikes won't effect me unless it pushes all the appointments back. I was originally told 4 week break after chemo so won't worry me if they want to delay start to radiation for a couple of weeks. Joshsi is such a coooooool kid. The way Paula was talking she is intending to try to meet some of Auckland ones while there. I am on a mission today to get some answers re these blood sugars as last dose of chemo on Thursday and this one will be the one that will knock me and I don't want another visit to A&E! I am getting conflicting advice so on a mission for some answers but can't get hold of the people I need to talk to! And Sonia no I haven't been to da Vinci code yet!

well I had the meeting with Dr Perez the Oncologist from Dunedin today. After a long wait in the waiting room we finally got in there. He explained why I should have Chemo, because I had a high grade Tumor, and because I had 10 of 16 lymph nodes involved. He said that Chemo is no guarantee, but could improve my rate of cure by 65% or a little more, but that it was up to me if I had it or not! Of course I am going to, I need all the help I can get to beat this thing.
2265. OK so thats the same odds I was given with
standard chemo Joystik (ie first time around with only 1 large lump and 1 or 3 nodes affected). I reckon that stuff worked for me - otherwise I'd be riddled with cancer, not just local recurrance as it is. Hope that helps? Did he mention other pay chemo options above that? I'm guessing not?

2268. So I will be starting my Chemo next Thursday....
It is FEC, I will be having 6 treatments at 3 week intervals, that is assuming all is ok with bloods etc, so much what you have all had I guess. He told me that the most distressing thing about the chemo is the hair loss, but it does grow back. I got a prescription for 5 different anti nausea drugs, so i'm ready to go. I wont have my port in when I start but should by the second treatment.
2269. After that I have to go to Dunedin for 3 weeks....
for radiotherapy, and the probably hormone therapy for 5 years. So there is a bit too do yet, but all this treatment is going to be my friend at the end of the day. I can beat this and I WILL!!!!

Ryan found that the hardest part when i had to shave it short (hes always loved his hair would spike it)as it was starting to fall out he thought i was shaving it all off he was crying, even the nurse had to walk out as she couldnt bear him crying.He wouldnt look in the mirror kept saying im ugly, took a few days before he came to like his bald look, i loved it really suited him bought out his gorgeous eyes.

Beautiful crisp morning here too. Joystik so pleased the CT Scan was all clear. Seems they treat everyone differently with chemo. I was on the CAF recipe. Did they give you a voucher to go and sort out a wig? I had a couple of fun days doing that. Take a friend with you to help make the decision.My friend took photos of me with different wigs on. she needed to go to the dental department she is a doctors nightmare she is so frightened of docs,dentist,anything medical she gets hysterical so they refer her there so they can give her some happy gas to relax her, have no idea where this has come from as she has never been hurt (other than a filling hurt) wonder if it comes from all the treatment ryan has had???????if you say needle she almost crumbles.

I haven't had a chance to read the whole thread but I am so inspired by your stories. I have been diagnosed with bladder cancer will be going into hosp in a couple of weeks to have it removed. The outlook is good for me and after a dose of chemo I should be fine. I take my hat off to all you brave people who are going through a very hard time and able to stay positive through this.

for that mattymouse, yes bladder cancer does have a high success rate which is why I feel lucky compared to what other people on here have suffered. The doc told me I had one in a million chance of getting this type of cancer as I have no risk factors ie I am reasonably young at 38, I am female and I don't smoke. Why can't I be the one in a million who wins lotto! lol. How was your Mum after surgery? did she get up and about fairly quickly?

Sorry to hear about the bladder cancer - yep we drew the short odds (I'm the same - fit no risk factors whatsoever - go figure!). Glad your outcome expectations are so good - I've decided I don't want to know mine now! I'll be telling my oncologist that in no uncertain terms before he blurts it out! and thanks to all for your great support in my hours of need, it was really funny as i set off to napier at 9am on thursday and at about 12pm i got a ph call from the mr, i had asked him to phone if results came so when i saw his number come up i got very nervous (which isnt good while you are driving lol) so he told me exactly as the letter said that it was fibrocystic cysts and that it wasnt serious, thats what the letter said (it was from my doc) well from then on all the way there i had this stupid grin on my face everyone must of thought i was nutty but i wanted to wave to the world and let them all know about it, i hope all you brave ladies get good news about whatever it is you need, and hugs to you all, you have been a tower of strenghth when i needed it, hugs hugs and more hugs

took kirsty to greenlane this morning for her appointment and she was back at school by 9.30, so decided i would go to the shops and walk around as ryan had no appointments...HA HA HA...driving down to lynmall Ryan said oh yea Mum look at these spots, well i nearly crashed the car small red spots on his leg and a few on hios arm, a phone call to my nurse and we were heading into starship so they could have a look, not chickenpox PHEW not sure what they are just have to keep any eye on them.

I got our girls immunised (lucky me could do that) against the Pox to be safe while I was going through chemo. I got sick a few times with other bugs they brought home - they'd be down for 1 or 2 days and I'd be a writeoff for over a week! So I know how much badder it can be. Hopefully whatever-it-is will settle down soon, glad he's feeling OK - good sign ;o)

Havn't been on for a while so havn't had the chance to read through the thread so trusting you all are well. Briyanna started her 2nd round of chemo yesturday. All updates are on her website (www.caringbridge.com/visit/briyanna). I am extremely worn out. Briyanna's father turned up at the hospital today. More stress. Havn't seen him in 6 months. Hollie has got the chicken pox (thanks daycare!) Hopefully Caleb doesn't catch them. It's really the last thing we need as Briyanna is neutroplenic now, so she could catch anything. Apart from that, all is well (lol). Briyanna is doing well, tired but recovering well from the op (only last Tuesday!) and dealing with the chemo fine for now.

I have no idea why people don't keep them at home. It's a huge hassle for us obviously. I've come home for the night and left Briyanna with mum (Kids dad would be insane to turn up while she's there, be like putting a fly with a spider hehe). I'm a little cut up about seeing him. Had a whole wad of different feelings. As said theres nothing I can do about it unfortunately. Briyanna was thrilled to see her father, but she's 3, any 3 year old loves their dad. He wanted to see the other 2 kids, but doesn't know where I live, so will sort that out tonight. I'm so angry at him.

Thanks to mothers who brought sick kids in I had to keep my youngest here with me for two weeks at one point while I was terribly sick and needed huge doses of R&R. Got me fuming - and I don't fume that often ;o) Sorry to hear Dad's a problem. Guess it's good he wants to see the kids, I know dad's who just disappear forever - not nice for the kiddies long-term.Hope you can work something out and he behaves himself. (((((Hugs)))))

Got my prescription up to the pharmacy to have it filled, for the anti nausea drugs, so I am ready for what ever happens next week. He prescribed 3 different types, so surely something must work!! away at the door when I was caregiving for Barnados. Any sign of green snot or gunky eyes and they were back to the car quick. Not only for the sake of the other kids but for me as well. Because all but 1 of mine were working mums, it wasn't fair it the only one that wasn't turned up with her kids sick, and it was almost always that one that did. Same with nits - weren't allowed in the house. But I have seen themin childcare centres with all sorts wrong. No fair at all. Did you get all your phone calls made?? I been thinking about you today while thinking about this wig thing. I'm going on Friday to have a look I think.

They just said its up to Dr Benjamin to address most of my concerns but I could discuss with Oncologist on Friday and if he agrees with me to do an ultrasound then they'll happily do it. And if I still want to see Shas thats OK too. But it was left to discuss with oncologist - given thats only 2 days away now.

2318. Re the wigs
As you know, I'm all for them! Still wearing mine now, been wearing it all day ;o) I look all glam today for a change - all my jeans need washing so got the skirt, earrings, whole caboodle on LOL! Definately take a friend with you when trying the wigs on, and go with an open mind - its fun to try something new ;o) The thing with shoulder-length wigs is you really have to go the more pricey natural hair way, as synthetic wigs don't last long before fraying etc at the ends when rubbing on shoulders all the time as your current style would. My wig shop pointed that out to me. Remember you are entitled to a $400 subsidy. Up here that's what my wig cost, so it was free ;o) So make sure you get that - its arranged at time of sale, so they have to be set up for it. Have fun :o)

from a night safari walk at the zoo it was so cool, the lions i have never seen them so active and noisy, for those who know the zoo there is a viewing glass area where you can see the lions well the lion was right on the other side looking straight at the kids (yum dinner) then it would stand on its hind legs and claw at the glass very cool.Then as we walked towards the elephant enclosusre the lion was stalking us all the way, very freaky.....what a cool knight...thanks CCF

Having a bit of a down day today. Briyanna looked quite ill this morning. This is the first morning that I've gone in and felt the realness of the situation if you get what I mean. It's heartbreaking. It was only a few months back that she was roaring around the backyard enjoying life. She was happy to see her dad this morning. I left them to it so I could come home and spit out a few poems. Sometimes it just seems that theres no light at the end of this tunnel.

2338. Hi sonia... I went to the neighbours for a coffee
last night, for her birthday, and didn't get home til 11pm. Bit late for me but had a nice time too. Kevin came too which was nice, cos he's not a very social person like me, and doesn't find it so easy to talk to people, no like me!! The people here in this wee town are so lovely and friendly, and have been so good to us since I got this CANCER. They just care so much and want to help. The appointment with the surgeon is now next wednesday, the day before chemo starts, so I wont have my port in for the first dose. I phoned the wig lady, and she is sick, so thought it best I stay away until she is much better, so I may see her on wednesday too. I have been on the web site and printed off pics of the ones I like. She give you some to try on and take home and if you dont like what she has, there is a catalogue and she can get them from Auckland overnight. Thanks so much for your comments about wigs. I had decided to go for a short style and I can definately see lots of merit in that choice now. Funn

I see on TV about the Radio therapists strike last night and they are sending some patients to Aussie for treatment!! And in todays paper, about taking people off the waiting lists that are waiting for reconstruction, saying that they will probably have to fund their own operations privately!! CANCER SUXS!!!!

search - thats great, glad I could help ;o) Yep all these strikes are a pain, if there was a private option for radiation treatments, believe me I would have taken it!!! I'm just relieved I have just one to go _ I'd be freaking out if I was only halfway through, or near the beginning etc. Surely the women can wait till later for the reconstructions? I was told by surgeon there is no benefit of getting it done at time of mastectomy, but there were benefits of holding off till after treatments - was certainly the wise choice in my situation! I soooo don't care about the prosthesis now, stuff it, maybe more women with go for mammograms after seeing me wandering around with only one boob LOL. I hope so! Glad you have such a great support network. Thats awesome :o)

Hi all yes a busy day today
Had a list of shopping errands to complete, then had to tidy house as some strangers coming to look at the glass wall in our new bathroom as they're planning to do something similar - apparently we're the first to have this type of glass done like this in Auckland! Anyway they stuffed us around, finally saying they'd be here at 2pm and didn't show till 2.30pm so I had to get my M-I-L to collect Lydia from school for me. Was a pain but I was happy to help, as when we were booking it all in, there were no examples for us to see! Their tardy arrival meant I missed out on seeing Lydia's part in her class show at assembly today - very bummed about that (although I know exactly what she did as she rehearsed it with me heaps!), hopefully there will be a next time soon ;o)

I am spitting mad. Have just heard on the TV news that this wonderful compassionate government has just made more cuts to the health budget. Woman waiting for breast reconstruction after surgery for cancer, have been totally bumped off the waiting lists in most big hospitals. The waits for radiation are longer, because of the strikes. Why can't they pay these awesome workers what they deserve? I bet if Helen Clark got breast cancer, the situation would change over night. No, cancel that, she would just go to the top of the queue and everyone else would be bumped down a place. They interviewed a woman on the news who was distressed because she had waited nearly 11 weeks for radiotherapy and still had no date. I had to wait for over 11 weeks last year for my radiotherapy and the wait was unbearable, and your whole life was on hold until you knew. It sux.

and lillucy. I also lost my Mum to cancer 22 years ago at age 48. Sometimes lifes just not fair is is. And now I have cancer too, the same Breast Cancer that took my my. However it wont be taking me!! I am going to fight and beat this monster. Things have changed so much in the last 20 years and things are more advanced in medical fields. Woman are far more aware now days and have mammograms and things done much earlier, and still the success rate for cure is good, so at least we have that on our side as we fight on. my chemo next thursday, so I still have a long way to go yet, but I am very optimistic, and have a positive attitude to the whole thing. It just comes as such a bolt from the blue when you are diagnosed. There are so many people out there with the horrible disaese, hopefully one day real soon we will be able take a preventative so this heartache can stop for ever. I think in NZ the odds are about 1 in 3 which is very high. Must be very difficult being so far from your Mum while she's sick. Is there any chance of you being able to go and see her at all?? Just to let her know you are out there and thinking of her would cheer her up no end. I know it does with me. I don't have any family where I live apart from my husband and 15 year old daughter. Keep smiling.....

Hello you sound very much like a older friend of mine who is fighting the monster at present. She has fought off four lots of cancer in her lifetime and is buggered if she is not going to win this round now too. It is her state of attitude and mind that have kept her alive and going and when she got diagnosed with it again she was so p--d off and said to herself and us all this bloody thing is not going to get. I lost lost some very loved people in my life to this incedious disease but none had the determination such as my older friend to beat it and I see it in you you have my friends determination and spirit.

Well, had the big Oncology meeting this morning - what can I say, oncology meetings are rarely good! In some ways there was no-so-good news, in other ways hope, so overall I'm about the same coming out as going in, except a lot wiser about my options, so that's a good thing ;o) So, in a nutshell, some out-takes are: * The fact the cancer came back so soon (usually it happens a few years down track, not months as in my case!) is not good, means its a "pretty aggressive bugger" (his words). * I used the best chemo's they have and they didn't work as well as we'd have liked them to (understatement LOL). That said, there are some different types of chemo that work in different ways, and there are new drugs which taken together with them could work some magic by cutting off blood supply to the tumors or something. Its early days in research but indications are promising. I'd be a guinea pig it seems. * He felt my whole problem area and said "there's still some stuff there, but hard to tell whether swelling/scar

... tissue or remains of the lumps". Scans needed to ascertain what remains. Given a lot of other areas discussed, it makes sense to now wait the 4 weeks till the CT scan. [I will push Dr Benjamin on Monday that that be four weeks from today]. The lumps are definitely much smaller these days, for him to have said that by the way... Before the big radiation blasts, docs would just point straight at where the lumps are - they were so big, but not now! Also its only 3 weeks since mega blasts finished, so more improvements can still be hoped for. * Reason for caution with radiation blasts is that the body can only take so much, and the area "remembers it" for a long time afterwards. Doing a mega blast on a big area can mean the body never recovers (just falls apart or something), so that's why they do smaller areas as they did with me. Best thing to do from now is to wait until CT scan of whole area (and rest of body) to see what's what. I'm happy with that now that I understand that better. * Surgery is NOT a

... a good option, could make things worse, cancer may get into wound and it never heals etc. CT will determine feasibility. * We discussed Vitamin C injections and supplements etc. After much discussion, his final position was "they wont make the cancer worse, but they may help" so its OK (neither encouraged nor discouraged) to start trying the alternatives, best to take one supplement at a time for a while and see how I feel. So that's what I'll do. Here's the bible website on the topic (recommended to me by the Cancer Society), which I'll have another look at ASAP with the leads I have. * Finishing this radiation is the current plan, rest depends on next CT scan results, so I'll see him again in one month (i.e. shortly after the CT). All fingers and toes crossed please :o) It's not easy facing your own mortality, and this has been one of those days... Here's hoping for a better one tomorrow!

at how ridiculous it was to be so pissed off, by wet leaves on the kitchen floor!! But some days it takes a lot less than that, and I'm happy now its all done and the section looks real tidy again. I think the main thing was wanting to prove to myself mainly that I can still do all the things I used to do, like mow the lawns, and I even had a wee dig in the garden.....

I know how you're feeling about the impending chemo - been there! Try not to worry, it will be over pretty soon - seemed to go quickly for me, even with the awful second stuff. Remember you don't feel nautious the whole time, and the anti-nausia meds these days are brilliant. Just take note of what you feel in first few days, and what you're taking, you'll find you'll tweak things a bit each time until you get the optimum mix for you ;o) Oh, and remember to stock up on ginger things (ginger ale/beer, gingernuts... they work a treat!)

2410. The oncologist has prescribed zofran, maxilon and
another drug called Dexamethasone which is I think, a steroid?? I have to ake it all with me on thursday and they will tell me how to take what when, just until I get into the swing of things. Thats shouldnt take long...after all there is only 6 doses, so I am lucky really. Got to count your blessings every day I think, and if you think you are hard done by, have a think about a few other paople you know....it helps to put things into perspective, well for me anyway..

Worked a treat :o) Just check with the steroid, that they give you a programme where you cut down gradually in last couple of days, down to one then half a tablet - otherwise you fall down with an almighty crash! Well I did anyway (and I'm usually not a crashing sort ;o) and I think I remember Landylass having the same experience!They seem to have a "lets see how they respond" attitude with the steroids like we're lab mice LOL!

I finally plucked up enough courage to ring for my mammogram and appointment, it's on the 23rd, I was forced to, a friend gave me an ultimatum, "Either ring the clinic in the next two days, or I am going to ring your Daughter and tell her". We're back. I felt so tired when we got home and now I've caught up on the last 5 days on here I feel for you all. I dont know where to start. I do hope I havent missed anyone - you are all so special to me/us. I thought about you all so much. Going back to the Childs Cancer Ward SUCKED!!! It all came flooding back, so many children in there! Its not right!!! They were so pleased to see us back. It was moving. Not really a place you want to feel welcomed! Anyway he got his chemo wednesday and with the orals he gets that made it three lots. That night was hideous he looked terrible and of course that bought it all back too. Thought we may have ended up back in the hosp. Then he was crying in pain for over an hour. Finally I got him off to sleep.Poor lamb. Tuesdays assessment went well, the lady was a psychologist and was öne of those beautiful people". She was great. Said he was a very bright boy and that was too his advantage after suffering the major brain hemmorhage. He is definately showing signs of struggling in certain areas. Another wake up for me/us. I have been reading some of these posts on this thread tonight and it made me cry. God it is not bloody fair what some of you are facing at present. My girlfriend lost her husband late last year to this wicked disease and I am without friends and family to this disease also. 10 close people in 3 years to be precise so there is a load of anger and hatred for this disease inside of me. I think you are all so brave and wondeful and as I said in a earlier post you are going to fight this monster like my dear friend is doing now. My heart goes out to all of you on this thread battling to fight cancer and the lady with her ill child I feel gutted for you as I many years ago spent a deal of time in a cancer ward with young children and it still haunts me now. We too had a bit of a sleep in. Sonia - cant wait either.Hope you have a lovely day with the girls getting your hair done. Bogeyi - Josh is on those steroids - Dexamethasone. So weight is piling on him too. These make him so grumpy - he can hear himself saying awful things and just doesnt want to be like that. Its horrible. We dont get a gradual weaning off them either its 7 a day for 5 days then stop. Boop - We just opened your message together and Joshi and I held each other crying. Thanks so much it meant so much to us. Probably going to be like that - bit emotional - always worse when your tired! YOU ALL ARE SO SPECIAL TO US. We had the big sleep in too...didnt get up til nearly 9am. Flat out now getting all the washing out while its sunny and breezy. Paula they are the same steroids that I will be on too. Ohhh weight gain...dont need that since I have lost 6kg already. (mind you some of that is in 2 boobs that I no longer have!!) Hope you have a lovely day today. I'm not too sure whether those steroids will affect you in the way it does Joshi. It just stimulates his appetite something chronic. He cant fill up. I try to watch what we gets into him but when he doesnt normally like most things, when he finds something he does enjoy, well for a week we buy it in bulk. Tee Hee You have a lovely day too. 2456. morning all.....well i had a crappy sleep woke
at 2am with a migraine (i get really sick with these)i have only got rid of it about half an hour ago but still feel yuk.Paula the fuuny thing is Ryans not on steroids hes just being piggy, he has always been little and peite part of FA when he went to transplant last Nov he was 7 weighing 17kg, nearly 7 months later he weighed in yesterday at 25.20kg.....lol

Sorry I havent posted for so long. I have read through the postings, laughing and crying What a journey we are all going through, whether it be suffering fromthe monster or watching our loved ones go through this.We have been very busy here.We went away for the long weekend to the coromandel and it was great. Hubby bought a new kite fishing contiki so he can do it by himself. he cannot go out fishing by himself as if he has a seizure no one is there. The boys were excited to be aty the beach too. Sonia how is your brother in law? I am thinking of you all and pray for all cancer sufferers every night. Take care. it was ovely and warm just like spring. So I did washing for Africa. Sheets, duvet covers, even put the feathers out to have a flap in the breeze. It all smells so nice after a day in the fresh air. It is supposed to rain tomorrow though so maybe the calm before the storm. Sherri told me you are busy cleaning your new house. Is it right in Westport?? 2471. Hi bogeyi, migraines are no fun at all....
Lauren got them for a whle when she was very young, about 3 or 4 and it was discovered she had a terrible urine infection!! She had it 4 months with no symptoms except the migraines which were happening every 28 days for 2 or 3 days. She ended up being admitted to hospital to see what was wrong, and that was what they found. She also had a hole in her heart when she was born but it was very minor and has repaired its self now. Hope you and yours are having a good day and the spots have retreated to somewhere else. Did you get your hair done too?? Hugs to you all ......

I just wanted to say, from earlier posts by others, that the steroids did NOT increase my weight, it was the second lot of chemo. I took steroids through both types of chemo, put only started packing it on after I started the Taxotere chemo. So I gues everyone's different ;o)

Old people are so fascinating arent they. Just a shame we only work all that out when the old people have almost all died. Kevin has an elderly Auntie and Uncle in Pakuranga who are both well into their 90's and we keep saying we should visit them, but don't make enough effort. We were talking tonight over dinner and have dcided that after my treatment, things are going to change and we are going to be doing all the things we have put off. And will do all the overdue visits. Gee sonia, you might see us yet!!

everyday things when you are confronted by this beast. You just have to make the most of everyday things and not wait for a few more years for anything. Ive been having a bit of a day today - emotional. Its so hard some days knowing the one thing you wanted so badly is sick!I just cant put a plaster on it. I am so lucky he is doing so well, yet feel so sad. Was just talking to my mum and she works with people who have brain damage etc and her husband suffered a brain hemmorhage so she was a great listener.Hearing from the psychologist that Josh is struggling with some stuff has really hit home and I just want to scoop him up and make him better. (It would be a big scoop and you'd all fit too). But we are in it for the long haul. I have had to come to terms with the fact that Josh has changed, I am so grateful I have him. I am so sorry I just needed to get it out. Bogeyi I hope you get a better nights sleep and feel so much better tomorrow. Take care of you!! xo

2484. Paula, I just feel so much for you...it is just
terrible for any parent to have to see their own child so ill and so bravely fighting on. You just seem so helpless, but at tleast there is hope for him to get better which is just great. You just never expect it at any stage - it always seems to be other people, then suddenly you are the other person. For me it was like being wacked in the forehead with a 4 x 2, several times. Now, even before I begin my Chemo, I can see light at the end of the tunnel, and it doesnt seem so bad. I know I have a lot to go thru yet and I know losing my hair will be awful when it does happen, but I also know that I WILL get better and so have to put up with these other things meantime. I just love my friends on here so much for the support they have been to me, and I know I can rely on people that know what its like climbing this mountain.. Special hugs to you all Paula....xxxxx

Thanks so much. Your right its so weird when its all of a sudden happening to you! Sometimes I still feel like I'm in a bubble watching it all happen around me. We are positive and I am sure it all helps with Joshi's recovery so far. He would be devastated to think I felt sad for him. That makes it harder. We are not religious people, we have our beliefs though. Tonight I found a note Cassie had written in a 5 year old writing and I could read it so clear... tonight i am gowing to pray to god that Josh gets better. Isnt that so cool! wanted to add that now my husband Chris comes on here and check up on you all. He is getting something out of this too. The psychologist asked me how we were doing and if we had seen anybody for us. To help with what we are going through. We both said no, and she was so lovely and said that she needed to say to us that it would be in every bodies best interest to see someone just to help us as its been a rocky road. We think we will, can only do us good. We want and need to walk this path together. So thats a positive :O)

I said in an earlier post about Lauren looking at me across the breakfast table on Friday morning and said "Mum, you wont get too sick on your Chemo, cos I have been saying my prayers and have asked God not to let you get too sick, cos you are special" Kool aye. We are not religious either but I believe there is a higher power out there. But surprisingly, Lauren has really had nothing to do with religion as such, and suddenly comes out with stuff like this. I love her to bits.....

You're sounding great! Yes I soooo want to do an OE ASAP, if only there was a break in these treatments. Still hoping for one later this year. Yes the hairs like Kylie M's now, slightly darker colour (reddish brown). He cut all the fuzzy ends off - it was longer. Looks quite funky ;o) Think my face needs longer hair, but can kind of pull it off! Yes went around the mall afterwards with my wig in a carrybag ;o) When I got outside though - brrrrrr! Need to buy me a couple of cool wooly caps to see me through. Kind of ready to ditch the wig ;o) for the mo anyway. May be needing it again in a few months! The hair grows at the normal rate once it gets started, and when its this short - its doesn't seem fast enough! I'm stoked today though ;o)

Yep took me ages to get through all the interview (which I recorded), to type up all the good outtakes from it (finished 11.40pm!?). My interview got cut short by the women in the next bed complaining that she wanted to sleep even though it was still 2 hours left of visiting hours?! Tom's a bit loud when he talks to me LOL his hearing is challenged and I have to shout questions in his ear for him to hear then he talks loudly back to me ;o) So I sympathised with the lady ;o) Anyway, I enjoy this stuff and its amazing how much life has changed in the last 90 years - unbelievable! Makes me realise how non-rediculous those future fantasy movies that Hollywood put on might actually be! Anyway, reason I'm gunning with it now is he lives waaaay up North which takes almost an hour to drive to, then back, and the talks take several hours (big time committment when you have young ones you're leaving behind) and now he's in local hospital just minutes away - expected to be discharged Monday. It's just an ankle injury fr
